NIGHTMARE IN QUEENS: NATS STUN METS IN 14-2 BLOWOUT

It was a night to forget at Citi Field as the New York Mets (10-20) were dismantled by the Washington Nationals in a lopsided 14-2 affair. What began as a hopeful return for left-hander David Peterson quickly turned into a defensive scramble that the bullpen simply couldn't contain.Peterson, making his first start since mid-April, struggled with command early. He surrendered seven earned runs over just 3.2 innings of work, failing to find the zone with his secondary pitches.
The Nationals' bats were relentless, led by James Wood and Curtis Mead, who combined for 5 RBIs and a pair of homers that took the wind out of the home crowd by the 5th inning. The lone bright spot for the Flushing faithful came in the bottom of the 4th when Juan Soto connected on a 430-foot moonshot to center field—his 8th home run of the season. Marcus Semien also showed signs of life with a multi-hit game, but the offense otherwise fell flat, managing only eight hits total against Nationals' starter Cade Cavalli, who fanned 10 Mets over six dominant innings.
"We have to flush this one," manager Carlos Mendoza said in a somber post-game presser. "The execution wasn't there from the first pitch, and against a divisional rival, you can't afford to fall behind that early.
