BREAKING: Mets Part Ways With Hitting Director Jeff Albert and Two Coaching Staffers Following Disappointing Season
The New York Mets have parted ways with Director of Hitting Jeff Albert, Quality Assurance Coach Danny Barnes, and BP Pitcher Kevin Mahoney in a major coaching staff shakeup. Read the full breakdown of the offseason changes in Queens.
The New York Mets have initiated their offseason housecleaning following a frustrating end to their campaign, announcing major shakeups to their Major League coaching staff.
Director of Major League Hitting Jeff Albert, Quality Assurance Coach Danny Barnes, and Batting Practice Pitcher Kevin Mahoney will not return to the big-league coaching staff.
While the trio has been relieved of their big-league duties, the team noted they could potentially remain within the organization in alternative roles, though all three are free to seek opportunities elsewhere.
End of a Short-Lived Big League Run
Jeff Albert, who previously served as the hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals from 2019 to 2022, was originally hired by the Mets in November 2022 as the organization’s Director of Hitting Development.
Prior to the season, Albert was elevated to lead the Major League hitting program following the departures of Eric Chavez and Eric Barnes. However, inconsistent offensive production, situational hitting slumps, and a failure to sustain momentum throughout the regular season ultimately led to the front office seeking a new voice in the dugout.
What’s Next for the Coaching Staff?
Despite the changes on the offensive side, the remainder of the core Major League coaching staff—including hitting coach Troy Snitker, bench coach Kai Correa, and pitching coach Justin Willard—is expected to return.
The moves signal the beginning of what promises to be a active offseason in Queens as the front office looks to retool the roster and coaching structure ahead of Spring Training.
