The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3 in a thrilling divisional matchup at Citi Field. Pete Alonso's three-run homer in the fifth inning proved to be the difference as the Mets extended their lead in the NL East.
Kodai Senga delivered another strong performance, pitching 6.2 innings while allowing just two earned runs and striking out seven. The Mets bullpen held strong, with Edwin Díaz striking out the side in the ninth for his 19th save of the season.
The Phillies struck first with a solo home run from Bryce Harper in the first inning, but the Mets responded with a run in the second on a Jeff McNeil RBI single. The game remained tied until Alonso's decisive blast in the fifth.
"I was just looking for a pitch I could drive," Alonso said postgame. "It felt great to come through for the team in that situation. We're playing with a lot of confidence right now."
The Mets improved to 42-28 with the win, while the Phillies fell to 38-32. The two teams will meet again tomorrow night at Citi Field for the series finale.
